Andra världskriget bryter ut

World War II breaks out

When there was war. Sweden 80 years ago.

In the first days of September 1939, the evening newspapers were filled with dramatic headlines. War had broken out, bombs were falling over Warsaw, Poland was fighting for its life. The reports on the radio and in the newspapers told the news of Germany's attack on Poland, which began on September 1 and was the start of World War II. This did not come as a great surprise, since Hitler had already occupied Czechoslovakia in March 1939. On September 3, Britain declared war on Germany. Hitler now had his eyes on Finland, but so did Stalin, who crossed the Finnish border on the Karelian Isthmus on November 30.
