Prince Wilhelm. Duke of Södermanland. 1884-1965. Prince of Sweden.
Wilhelm was the son of King Gustaf V and Queen Victoria. It is also said that it was Victoria who chose the Russian Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna to be his wife. The Bernadotte family would then be united with the Romanov dynasty that had ruled Russia for almost 300 years.
They were married on 3 May 1908 in Saint Petersburg. The young newlyweds gave the impression of being happily married for the first few years after the wedding. In reality, they were like strangers to each other. The lively Maria Pavlovna did not get along with the awkward Prince Wilhelm. She described him as a young old man. The marriage dissolved and the first divorce of the Bernadotte family was a fact.
