"Shopping" Probably the world's first modern indoor mall
It was inaugurated on October 27, 1955 in Luleå. The building was designed by British-born architect Ralph Erskine. The idea of combining commerce with entertainment was very radical at the time.
The fantastic color image shows the Shopping shopping center with neon signs on the facade that clearly indicate the names of the stores. A larger sign has the Spegeln cinema showing the Red Pirate with Burt Lancaster in the lead role. People in period clothing from the 50s walk on the street. A Volvo duet and a Volvo Amazon pass by.

Possibly the world's first modern indoor mall, as Shopping was designed and built for that very purpose. The building consisted of floors with escalators and stairs like a modern mall. The idea of centralizing commerce under one roof was a radically modern idea at the time, combining commerce, entertainment and restaurants. The climate probably played a role, as the winters are long in this part of Sweden and the idea of doing your shopping indoors must have appealed.
