Carin Boalt and Hemmen Research Institute – a pioneer in Swedish consumer research
Carin Boalt (1912–1999) was a Swedish architect and researcher who played a crucial role in the development of consumer research and housing planning in Sweden. She became the first female professor at a Swedish technical university when she took up a position as professor of building function at Lund University of Technology in 1964.
Boalt was one of the initiators of the Home Research Institute (HFI), which was founded in 1944 with the aim of rationalizing home and household work. The institute conducted tests of kitchen utensils and household appliances, studied dishwashing and physical exertion during housework, and performed strength tests.
In 1957, HFI was reorganized and named the Swedish Institute for Consumer Affairs, which later became part of the Swedish Consumer Agency. Boalt's work at the institute helped put Swedish consumer research on the world map, and her contributions to housing sociology and community planning have had a long-lasting impact on Swedish welfare policy.
