Poster with a picture of UllaCarin Ryden on a Lambretta in 1951.

Imagine Stockholm in 1951, a city vibrating with post-war optimism, where the streets are lined with people in hats and coats, and a certain Italian flair is starting to take hold. In the middle of it all, on a shiny Lambretta LC, sits the radiant actress Ulla-Carin Rydén – a perfect blend of glamour and rebellious charm! The camera clicks, and photographer Kristoffersson captures a moment that is as timeless as a black and white film. Join us on a journey through this wonderful piece of 50s history!
The Lambretta LC – where the "L" stands for Luxury, of course – is no ordinary scooter. No, this is an Italian diva on two wheels, manufactured between April 1950 and November 1951, with just 42,500 units rolling out of the factories. Imagine a three-speed beauty that could whip up speeds of 65–70 km/h – not bad for a time when many still cycled or took the tram! But it also required a bit of love: the petrol had to be mixed with 5% oil, as if it were a fine cocktail that needed to be shaken, not stirred. What made the LC extra fancy was its design – the first Lambretta to feature leg-protecting front plates and sheet metal side panels, giving it a sleek, streamlined look that screamed "I am the future!"
And there, on the saddle, sits Ulla-Carin Rydén (1926-1974), as if she had just stepped off a film set or perhaps on her way to one. With a twinkle in her eye and a skirt fluttering in the wind, she exudes that magical combination of class and cockiness. The Lambretta simmers beneath her, chromed and shiny, as if it knows it is carrying a star. Stockholm is the backdrop. Is she a film star on her way to a premiere, or just out for a ride for fun? That is what makes the image so captivating – it could be both!
The Lambretta LC was more than just a vehicle; it was a ticket to freedom. For a woman like Ulla-Carin, it meant being able to steer herself, literally, at a time when the world was still getting used to the idea of women taking up space. With the wind in her hair and the engine singing, she could whizz past both literal and figurative obstacles, all while Kristoffersson's camera captured the moment.
So the next time you see an old picture of a scooter, think of Ulla-Carin and her Lambretta LC – a luxurious, three-speed dream that carried her through the streets of Stockholm in 1951. There was a time when a scooter was not just transportation, but a stage, and Ulla-Carin played the leading role with flying colors!
