The mythical and inexplicable creature in Lake Storsjön in Jämtland has appeared to the people of the Storsjö area for centuries. People have tried to find explanations for the phenomenon but have not yet succeeded in proving what it is that exists deep down in the water.
The Storsjön monster has become an important part of local culture and tourists from all over the world travel to Storsjön to try to catch a glimpse of it.
In 1986, the County Administrative Board of Jämtland County banned anyone from "killing, harming or capturing it".
This illustration from 1944 shows two women fleeing from the dock where they are washing clothes. They drop their clappers in terror. These were used to beat the clothes to get the rinse water out on so-called clapper docks.
The illustration was originally published on the cover of the magazine Såningsmannen.
