Poster with a historical photograph from Trondheim and the Gamle Bybro that crosses the Nidälven River. At this time in 1949, cars could pass over it, but the Gamle Bybro is now closed to car traffic.

The Old Bybro is today one of Trondheim's most characteristic landmarks and is also called the Portal of Happiness.

A picture by photographer Kristoffersson who visited the city in 1949 and we now have a charming series of pictures from Trondheim.

The bridge was built in 1861 and is one of the most iconic and historic buildings in Trondheim. It is a wooden bridge, something that is a rarity in modern times, something that gives it a unique character:

Architectural: The bridge is decorated with beautiful, small wooden buildings on each side of the bridge, called "sneddverker", where guards used to be kept. These small houses give the bridge an almost fairytale appearance, taken out of a Norwegian folk tale.
Location: The bridge connects the villages of Bakklandet and Midtbyen over Nidelven, and offers a picturesque passage over the river. From the bridge you can see both Nidaros Cathedral and Trondheim harbour, which makes it a perfect place to capture the city from different angles.
Cultural significance: The bridge is not just a transport link, but also a symbol of Trondheim's history and culture. The bridge is a popular motif for photographers and artists, and it is often included in pictures that represent the town.
Design: It has a simple, but elegant construction with arches and railings. The bridge is painted red with white details, which makes it stand out from the surrounding village environment.
Functionality: Despite its age, Old Town Bridge is still in use, both for pedestrians and cyclists, which makes it a living part of the town rather than just a historical monument.
Gamle Bybro is more than just a bridge; it is part of Trondheim's soul, a place where history, culture and the present meet.
