Poster with a historical photograph from Trondheim. A group of soon-to-be graduates are seen happy and celebrating. The front row holds a banner with the text "But I think they don't need to sew".
A picture by photographer Kristoffersson who visited the city in 1949 and we now have a charming series of pictures from Trondheim.
Trondheim continued to be an important academic town, with Norway's Technical University (now NTNU) since 1910. The students played an active role in society, and their demonstrations or parades were often part of the town's life and bustle.
1949 was a time when Norway was still recovering from the Second World War. This can affect the mood and message of the banner, which can reflect optimism or a willingness to move on from difficult times. But I don't think they need to sew» can be translated as 'But I don't think they need to worry'. This can be interpreted as a message of comfort or encouragement, perhaps aimed at society as a whole or at specific groups that may be concerned about the future, economic difficulties or political situations. The picture is thus not just a representation of a moment, but also a reflection on the students' role in society, their commitment and their contribution to the cultural and social reconstruction of Norway after the war.
Den Gamle Bybro was built in 1861 and is one of the most iconic and historic buildings in Trondheim.
