Poster with a historical photograph from Trondheim. An overview image with Nidaros Cathedral visible in the background.

Nidaros Cathedral. This magnificent cathedral, perched at the mouth of the Nidelven River, is not only Norway's national shrine but also a monument of timeless beauty and history.

From the first glance, Nidaros Cathedral dominates the cityscape with its imposing towers and detailed Gothic architecture. Built over the shrine of St. Olav the Holy, Norway’s patron saint, whose relics are said to be buried beneath the altar, the cathedral has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. You can almost feel the pilgrim trails beneath your feet as you approach.

Although construction of the cathedral began in the 12th century, its stones still seem to whisper stories of Vikings, kings and saints. The original building has undergone many changes, renovations and additions over the years, not least after the fire of 1531 that almost destroyed it. Every stone and ornament tells the story of the passage of time, from the grandeur of the Middle Ages to the gentle restorations of today.

A picture by photographer Kristoffersson who visited the city in 1949 and we now have a charming series of pictures from Trondheim.
