Svensktoppen and Ring and we'll play - radio classics

Radio history

Before television came along, there was only radio. It was the heyday of radio, before the arrival and dominance of television. Back then, radio broadcasts ruled the home and dictated habits. Everything stopped at major sporting events, such as when the Swedish running king Gunder Hägg competed in the 1940s. News broadcasts about the Second World War were broadcast via the radio and reached those who disturbed the silence that was surely needed when the family had gathered around the radio.

New favorites. In the 1960s, young listeners got their favorites and radio programs. Programs that were more or less forced on them by the audience despite moral sermons from opponents who believed that pop and rock music was the beginning of the decline of youth. Perhaps it was mostly because it is actually the case that generations have their favorites and have difficulty finding new ones.

Svensktoppen and Ring and we'll play. Two long-running radio hosts with millions of listeners. Popular and beloved presenters like Hasse Tellemar and Ulf Elfving kept their grip on the listeners. How many of you, like me, have sat by the radio during Svensktoppen and waited to see which artist has now taken first place? The picture is from 1971 and is nice to look at, isn't it?
