Chamberlain Christian Fredrik von Nackrey (b.1806) requested “since he had been encouraged with rather flattering confidence in his established snuff and tobacco trade here in Linköping as well as in surrounding towns” for permission to operate a snuff and tobacco factory. The privilege was granted on January 29, 1846. The business was operated at Magasinstorget.
In 1859 the tobacco factory was valued at 19,500 rdr rmt. He took on the merchant Jon Fredrik Asklund (1814-1884) as a partner under the firm CF von Nackrey & Co. When Nackrey died, Jon Asklund took over the factory alone in 1860. The new name was Jon Asklunds tobaksfabrik. After Jon Asklund's death in 1884, the business was taken over by his son Ernst Asklund (1846-1907).
The antique sign with its archaic typography and design is an interesting and decorative motif. The more than 100-year-old advertisement is reproduced as it looks today. Even with its slightly worn surface, it is a journey back in time to an era when no one is around to ask what life was like back then. The Jon Asklund sign attracts attention and almost guarantees a conversation about it when you see it.
