Poster with a picture of Landstormen's youth department .

The picture was taken in November-December 1939 when Sweden was mobilizing its defense as World War II had begun. The Finnish Winter War had also begun, which created a high level of commitment to join voluntary defense organizations, old and young.

Even young people. It is the Stockholm Landstormsförbund youth department on Lidingö that started its activities already in connection with the First World War. The association consisted of 300 Stockholm boys where the minimum age of entry was 14 years.

They practiced weapons handling and lived in the association's cabin on Lidingö during the exercises.

Maybe it would be a good idea to warm up with hot chocolate and sandwiches on that slightly chilly and cold day.

Photographer Kristoffersson took the picture and others on the same occasion, which was published in the magazine Se no. 64 in 1939.

A charming and irresistible image that, in context, tells a lot about what the Swedes did during World War II, young and old.
