Action
After beating up his master in a drunken brawl, the farmhand Gustav Karlsson is on the run. During his escape, he passes a hayfield in the forest, where a young woman is raking hay. They start talking to each other and he offers to help her with what she has left to rake. As a thank you, she shares her food basket. When he is about to leave, he says "My name is Gustav" and she replies "My name is Ida". Then they part ways, but fate wills that they meet again. A year later, Gustav has been taken into the good graces of Captain Jägerschiöld, of the Kalmar Regiment, who enlists him as a private soldier. He is given a new name, Rask, and a croft that is part of his military service.
Ida is a maid on a nearby farm and when they meet again they remember their meeting on the hay meadow. They fall in love and after many difficulties are able to get married and Ida moves into the soldier's farm. And so the story continues about their struggle for a decent life despite years of poverty and harassment from jealous villagers. Among the good and bad in the parish are Oskar, the jealous farmer on the farm where Ida previously worked. Nergårds-Anna, the dangerously spoiled beauty from the beginning of the story and Johan Klang, also a soldier with his own farm in the village. All three will nestle into Rasken's and Ida's lives with fateful consequences.

Raskens became extremely popular and had more than five million viewers at most.
